Chapter 31: Three Birthdays and a Funeral

Image
A few more tries later, Link is about to age up still without a sibling in site. He's now eating well, and sometimes even without the mess, but crawling is still a far way off it seems. "Some children just never crawl," Willow tells her daughter on the phone. "It is nothing to worry about, I promise. He'll be running around soon enough and you'll forget you ever worried about him crawling." Christmas is a perfectionist, however, and she does not like not completing things. But life has its own ways of humbling you, and this time, Christmas must settle for preparing for a birthday party without that perfect result of Link reaching all his milestones. As usual they celebrate outside by the pool, a laid back affair in summer clothes and swimsuits, and Willow grill some food for everyone. Grandpa Lawrence adores his grandson. And everyone is enjoying the warm weather, the pool and the food. Though not everyone got the memo about this being a laid back affair...

Sets backs have not been many in Christmas' life. As promisedto her mother, she's been generally happy, easy to find satisfaction in even little things, and with a drive and strive for perfection that has made her succeed in most things. Getting pregnant is not most things, and this time neither her drive, her strive for perfection or her ability to feel satisfied helps her conceive. For the first time in her life, there is little she can do that will actually make a difference. They do their best to keep their spirits up, discussing baby names at dinner... painting playful paintings for the nursery... and finishing the treehouse for their future kids to play in. They want two, one girl and one boy. The prefect family. If they would only show up. Perhaps the treehouse will yield a lucky result? Worth a try. Whether it was the treehouse, or the many tries in the bed, Christmas finally finds herself pregnant! Just as she was ready to give up on tradition and suggest using science...
