Chapter 43: Very Green Eyes

With Link having moved away, the house in San Sequoia feels much emptier for the family. Harmony misses her older brother terribly, and while Christmas and Jamie are proud of him they too miss their baby boy.

Amity is doing her best to keep them on their toes, however, by running off in a second so that you never know where you have her. Her motor skills are developing fast, as is her imagination. She's especially good at being creative with how to make a mess around her, be it in the kitchen...

...or the bathroom.

No matter how many times her mother tells her not to play in the toilet.

The one thing that can make her sit still seems to be Harmony reading to her, something her sister seems to have an endless amount of patience for.

And when Amity misses her older brother the most, Harmony can also take the time to play with her the way he used to. It's not exactly the same, but close enough.

Link's old room now functions as Jamie's new office. He and Christmas debated on letting Amity have this room and giving back Jamie his old office, but decided that it was better for Amity to keep the room she was used to. Jamie makes it work, though he is considering painting the room in a lighter color. When he can find the time. Which is rarely.

For more often, family time is more important, whether that be going to the small beach with Amity so she can play in the water, or mentoring Harmony in writing, or helping her with homework, so that she can get that A she is working towards.

Of course the latter requires some work from Harmony of her own too. The night before a test she stays up late into the night to study.

In Brindleton Bay Link has his own studying to do. A lot of his time is spent working on crafting treats and mixing medicine, to learn the proper amount of doses for everything.

But sometimes he gets to observe Miles working, being in the examining room as he treats patients.

A surprising amount of time goes to swabbing the floor after animals throw up or pees on the floor.

And then, finally, after long hours of observation, he is finally allowed to see his first patient. An easy case of flees, with Miles standing over him and watching so he doesn't make a mistake. He's hard to impress, and Link can feel his critical eyes in the back of his neck as he works on his patient. He knows that it will be a long while before he's trusted to be alone with a patient.

Spending so much time at the clinic, Link is exhausted when he returns home at night. The long hours, the amount of things to learn, it's rare that he does anything but eat dinner with the Ritters and stay in his room watching TV until he falls asleep. His hopes of finding a significant other crumbles when faced with the tiredness that comes with learning something so complex as to be a vet.

At least it hasn't gone that far for his sister. Harmony, now having completed her resolution, has decided she deserves some fun, and some friends, so when she gets the chance, she invites Claudia over to her house to "study together", which means mostly gossiping and chatting together in Harmony's room. She doesn't know Claudia well yet, but she has the greenest eyes she's ever seen and Harmony doesn't mind studying that a bit more intently, not that she in any way has the guts to try to make a move. Claudia would probably think her an idiot, so best not to try.

And there are other things to focus on. It's Amity's birthday and the whole family is coming over. Even Link has to take some time off to join them. As usual for their summer parties, they are outside on the patio by the pool, enjoying the warm rays of the sun.

This of course means that Valentine couldn't come even if he wanted to, and since seeing the reactions of his parents, he's not about to tell his relatives about his choice to become a vampire. So he makes another lame excuse about being too busy with his internship and stays in Forgotten Hollow, something that puts a damper on things for his parents. It's killing Sunny not to be able to talk to his cousin about what is going on, but he follows his wife's lead on this and keeping it to himself at the moment.

Still, as far as a party goes, this one is fairly okay. There is good food, good company and a cake waiting to have its candles blown out.

And so toddler Amity grows up to be an outgoing little girl who loves to play.

When Claudia shows up on a whim, she and Harmony goes inside to hog the video game, but only for a second before Amity comes along.
"Can I play too?"
"This isn't for kids and the game has already started," Harmony tells her. There are after all times when you don't want your baby sister around.
"It's my party!" Amity snaps. "And if you don't let me play I'll tell mom you said no to me on my birthday!"

Harmony knows when she's lost. Amity sits down in between the girls and get a controller. Harmony thinks she could at least have made herself useful by making Claudia move closer rather than being a hindrance and getting in between them.
