Chapter 57: How to Brighten up a Room

"Are we sure about this?" Daisy asks Harmony as they step back from their handywork.
"Well, it's a bit too late to change our minds. And the kitchen and living room is brighter with the white."
"But not the columns."
"I know, but I think it would look weird if we..."
"Yeah."
Taking a step further back, the two young women look at the kitchen, now white.
"It made the counter look more yellow," Daisy points out.
"I know." Harmony has to admit she's not sure about this. The old kitchen was dated and dark, this is lighter, but the counter does look more yellow, and the half wall into the room and the columns are still dark and too much of a pain to paint. Should they have left it as it was? Perhaps. But done is done and at least it's not dark anymore.

With the painting done, Harmony heads outside for a walk. She heads down to the beach and follows the boardwalk along the coast. Autumn winds are drawing in, even in the lingering warmth of last summer. It won't be long until sweaters and coats are brought out, but not quite yet. Harmony quite likes the autumn, but she feels for all the strays in the area.

Just then she hears a soft whining. She looks down to see the most spectacularly beautiful cat, a little miniature lion coming towards her, begging for food.

"Hi, little one. Aren't you a beautiful lion," she tells the proud cat. Offering it a treat is a winning strategy for friendship and before long the cat is purring in her arms. "Oh there is just no way I'm letting you go," Harmony says to the purring cat, hugging it close.

Is it a good idea for them to have more pets? Maybe not, but that's not going to stop Harmony from bringing the cat home. "I think I'll call you Leo if that is okay with you," she says as they walk home, right then Leo buffs her arm as if agreeing, or looking for food in her pocket. Hard to tell.

Either way, Leo quicky makes himself at home in the house, falling asleep on the sofa after a good meal.

The next day Link takes a look at Leo. "You might want to rethink that name," he says to Harmony.
"Why?"
"Because he's a she."
"With that mane?"
"You know that cats aren't actually lions, right? It's just fur, and yes I'm sure. How about Leona?"
But Harmony refuses. "She agreed to Leo, then Leo is her name." She looks over Link's shoulder. "Think she might have kittens one day?"
"No, she's aging up, it's why she's behaving like that. She's an elderly cat now. Probably why she was so easy to bring home. She seems to be in surprisingly good health though."

With Leo in the household, Harmony might run a bit amok with the decorations. Leo gets not only a food bowl and a litter box, but a climbing tree that takes up a fair bit of space in the living room. And as she's fixing things for Leo, Harmony is fixing things for the house as well. She gets new curtains for the season, and brings in leaves to decorate the fireplace and table. Out of the flowers she finds she makes flower arrangements in the season colours.

Leo says thank you for the leaves on the table and starts playing with them while cautiously staying clear of the dog who Daisy is cuddling on the sofa. "Be jealous all you want," Daisy tells the new cat, "But he misses his daddy and someone needs to cuddle him with Link being away so much."

The vet clinic is keeping Link away a lot. After the Ritters moved to Tartosa for their retirement, he's been struggling to find new vets while still keeping the place running. Finally now he's found two. Well one and a half. Ariel is a highly skilled vet, and someone he can trust to take care of the patients on her own.

Candice on the other hand, is still learning and so she's mostly working as a lab assistent at the moment, unless Ariel or Link can supervise her with the animals. But she care about the animals and is good at taking instructions and training, so Link has hope for her.

Link, himself, has become a level 10 veterinarian.

He enjoys working with his new staff, especially Ariel whose skill and expertise he soon learns to appreciate. He also likes her sense of humor and her cheerfulness.

Anne is less impressed. As she comes in with one of her cats, she takes one look at Ariel and becomes sad. "Is that your new highly skilled vet? She doesn't seem old enough to be highly skilled," she says, annoyed.

She stays annoyed as Link treats her cat, and doesn't appreciate Candice being in the room, even if it is just to observe and clean.

When Candice leaves them alone and her cat is cured, she can't hold back the tears. Maybe it's just been a stressful day, Link suggests, but Anne just shakes her head. "I don't understand, you look for staff, but you only hire beautiful young women," she sobs as he tries to console her, promising that he loves her and wants to be with her.
"You'll feel better when you get to know them more," he assures her. "They'll come to Harmony's costume party, you can get to know them better there." Anne is not convinced, and now she isn't looking forward to the party as much as she had before.

Harmony is, however. She and Daisy has been planning this forever. Daisy is cooking and fixing drinks, Harmony has decorated the house, sent out invitations and worked on all of their costumes. When they sit down to eat, it's all she wants to talk about - a part from Leo. She loves talking about Leo and started a simstagram account for her.

She's gaining some attention, and Harmony is gaining photography skill.

The day of the party is finally here. Link has taken some time off work and is keeping the vet clinic closed for the Harvestfest holidays. He starts off his day with a jog with Diamond who is happy for the extra attention.

Back home he rakes up some of the leaves in the garden to make it tidier for the guests, but he's in such a good mood that he can't help playing with the leaf pile he's made.

When he's finished, he gives Diamond a bath.

And then, finally, it's time for the guests. Harmony lets Matt Felis in through the backdoor, even if she doesn't know why he's opted for that. She is a bit let down by his angry mood. He frankly seems furious. Who goes to a party furious? Harmony takes a deep breath and tries to cheer him up. Surely it will be better once the party gets started?

Inside, some of the other guests are talking. Dana has a really cool outfit, and Candice.. well it's an outfit. Catarina, however, showed up without one, apart from the ears she always wears. Harmony doesn't say that she thinks that's just lazy. She is a bit disappointed. She herself has worked very hard on her cat woman suit, and on Daisy's star wars inspired outfit and on Link's robot outfit.

At least Anna shows up looking fierce in a dangerous fairy kind of outfit.

Unfortunately her mood is about as good as Matt's. She's not furious, but not really friendly either, making snide remarks to the women in the room.

When Daisy serves the dinner, a meal she has worked on most of the day, everyone grabs a bite then heads outside to eat it for no apparent reason. Surely the inside is more suitable, even the sofa, than the cold autumn veranda? But people doesn't think so, changing out of their costumes in order to go outside instead. Harmony doesn't like it.

Especially as many of them stay out of costume when they go back in. What is the point of inviting people to a costume party, if they don't wear their costumes!

The matter gets worse when Leo jumps up on the table and start eating the food.

And Anne loses it when Ariel shows up in a scare crow outfit that would make most people unattractive but which makes her look beautiful (or at least Anne thinks so).

Instead of getting to know her, Anne lays into her, and before long the two are in a heated row in the middle of the living room for no good reason what so ever.

That kind of kills the party. People start going home soon after. Harmony is not happy and neither is Anne, who goes home, locks herself in her walk in closet/guest bedroom/cry room (she's gloomy, she has the right to a gloomy cry room) and just let herself cry it out.

Disappointed that her party did not go according to plan, Harmony spends the next day comforting herself by eating sweets. Luckily for her Daisy has been promoted and is working on learning more sweet recipes so the house is well stocked with cupcakes, pies and cobbler.

This is also the day when Harmony comes up with the idea to not only simstagram Leo, but write about him.

The book is a success, and finally Harmony is acknowledged to be a real author.

With the bonus she receives she fixes up her office, and get Daisy an extra light in the kitchen to aid her cooking. Now that made the real change in making the kitchen brighter. The white counter looks far better this way too.
